To your right, you will see a picture of UFC fighter Clay ‘The Carpenter’ Guida. If you are not sure which one he is, he’s the one whose head looks like it’s exploding with hair.
And it was that very hair which led to him being sidelined from THQ’s recent UFC title, UFC 2009 Undisputed. With all of the technology crammed into the consoles of today, one would think that rendering hair would not be such an issue, but then, who has hair like Guida? And so here we are.
Fight! Magazine says his maniacal mane was causing the developers various problems, from major clipping (polygon, not hair) to collision detection issues. It reached the point that THQ offered Guida cash to cut his hair in real life, so that they wouldn’t have to deal with it in the game any more.
But, Guida refused to lose the locks, and so he got left out entirely, as his character was said to be borderline unplayable. I guess something had to be cut, one way or the other.
On a related note, Carlito Colón of WWE’s RAW brand, who interestingly enough was not cut from THQ’s SmackDown! VS. RAW 2009, could not be reached for comment in time for this story.
Maybe next time out, instead of a Cell Processor, Sony (and/or Microsoft) should look into a Hair Processor.
