Platform exclusivity is a dinosaur, slowly choking on meteorite dust and on the verge of utter extinction. The end came a bit closer today as Insomniac, makers of the hugely popular Ratchet & Clank franchise, announced that their next IP would be appearing on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. From the desk of
Andrew Ryan Ted Price:
“Lately, many of you have been asking, ‘what’s next?’ Today, we’re excited to announce that we have created a brand new universe and franchise for you to experience in the coming years. As we develop it, one of our goals is to provide an awesome experience for as many players as possible. With that in mind, we’re working with EA Partners to bring this title to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.”
While the knee-jerk reaction of PlayStation enthusiasts may be to boo the move, this is really a net win for the gaming populace as a whole. Gamers should ask themselves, deep in their heart of hearts don’t they want people who don’t own a PS3 to still be able to experience games of the caliber of Ratchet and Resistance? Besides PS3 owners, since Bungie is now teaming with Activision that means you’ll likely see their next franchise come to Sony’s black box, can’t you return the love?

Furthermore, it’s important to point out that Insomniac’s relationship with Sony has always been a friendly one, and the two companies are still on the best of terms.
“We know many of you are extremely loyal to the PlayStation family, and especially to Resistance and Ratchet & Clank,” said Price. “We are too. Our relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment is still very strong, and continues as we develop additional projects exclusively for PlayStation 3 – projects that will take full advantage of our additional development time.”
In other words PlayStation owners don’t freak out just because Insomniac is also going to work on the Xbox 360, you’re still their first love. You’re the one they’ll remember making out with at the drive-in and awkwardly fumbling with your bra until eventually giving up and just asking you to unhook it for them. You’re still the one, you’re just not the only one anymore.
