Amaterasu and Thor Announced for Marvel vs. Capcom 3

More news from Comic-Con today, as Capcom has just announced two sort-of new characters for the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Marvel’s Thor is a shoe-in, especially considering the revival the character is facing over the coming year, with a brand new feature film and obligatory video game tie-in coming next summer. Plus, he’s got a big ass hammer, and he’s totally badass.

Less likely, and doubtless more exciting, is the addition of Okami‘s heavily stylized wolf god, Amaterasu, who will be using her unique Celestial Brush to bring pain and unhappiness down on combatants. Okamiden, the franchise’s first iteration since the original PS2 game, will be hitting the DS next year, but the powerful pup is still an odd choice for a fighting game.

“On the Marvel side, get ready to wield Thor’s hammer along with already-announced Marvel characters Deadpool, Hulk, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Doom and Super-Skrull,” reads a press release sent out just moments ago. “On the Capcom side, Okami’s wolf god Amaterasu joins already-announced Dante, Ryu, Morrigan, Chris Redfield, Felicia, Trish and Chun-Li.”

The roster, though trimmed down from previous entries in the series, is looking very robust indeed. Obviously, there are many characters that have yet to be revealed. Your guess is as good as ours when it comes to who those characters might be, although we’ve still got our fingers crossed for an appearance by the purple-haired Hit Girl. Our other vote has to go to the Japanese dude on the cover of the original Mega Man– he’s perfect for an ass whooping from Thor’s mighty hammer.

It’s been a decade since Marvel vs. Capcom 2 doled out the fan service to followers of both Marvel’s comic universes and Capcom’s library of video games, and fans have been clamoring ever since for the melding of the two worlds to enter the modern console landscape. Based on our hands-on at E3 last month, they won’t be disappointed.
