The console MMO genre is in shambles. Well, it would be, if it ever actually got anywhere. It needs saving. It needs a hero.
Apparently Cryptic Studios decided to interpret that plight literally, and thus, we have Champions Online, a brand new superhero MMO — based on a pen-and-paper RPG — published by 2K Games.
“2K Games is a terrific publishing partner for Champions Online,” said John Needham, CEO of Cryptic Studios. “Cryptic is proud that Champions Online will be 2K’s first MMO title and we look forward to working together towards a tremendous launch next year.”
Cryptic last unleashed City of Heroes/Villains, a PC exclusive superhero MMO, so if there’s anyone who can bring the concept over to consoles in a single bound, it’s them. The game will also be bringing its particular brand of costumed justice to the PC, so hopefully Cryptic will implement some kind of cross-platform play.
2K and Cryptic will launch Champions Online during spring 2009. I’ll be there with bells on. And spandex.
