Ys IX: Monstrum Nox announced for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC

First on PS4

NIS America has announced Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The newest entry into the long-standing action-RPG franchise is set to come out next year for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. But the PS4 will see the game first before the other platforms. Check out the announcement trailer here!

The Ys series is a juggernaut among games that originate from the Land of the Rising Sun but despite literally close to twenty mainline entries and spin-offs, it’s still firmly entrenched in a niche corner. But those who are adventurous and tried it, are loving it which represents itself with crazy-high user ratings on almost every entry.

Renowned adventurer Adol “the Red” Christin and his companion Dogi arrive at Balduq, a city annexed by the Romun Empire, only for Adol to be detained before setting foot inside. While imprisoned, he meets a mysterious woman named Aprilis who turns him into a Monstrum, a being with supernatural Gifts and the power to exorcise monsters. Now, Adol must ally with his fellow Monstrums to fend off the fearsome threats emerging from a shadowy dimension called the Grimwald Nox, as well as unravel the mysteries of the Monstrum curse, and the truth behind the unrest within Balduq.

With Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, the series is continuing its signature real-time action combat coupled with deep story portion and RPG elements. Adol, the iconic hero is once again in the driver’s seat as well. This time he’s both cursed and blessed with new monstrous powers that he will need to save the large city of Balduq from the evil Grimwald Nox and its army of monsters.

Newcomers to the series can look forward to memorable and challenging boss fights that demand both a healthy understanding of enemy patterns and the right choice of weapon. In that front, you can probably most-easily compare it to Nier: Automata.
