Xbox 360 update released, fixes ‘color issues’

The PlayStation 3 wasn't the only console to receive a system software update today, as Microsoft's Major Nelson revealed an Xbox 360 update is rolling out as well.

Unlike the PS3 update, the Xbox 360 update is mandatory.  You will be prompted to accept and download the new update when you sign in to Xbox LIVE.  If already signed into LIVE, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update.

According to Nelson, this Xbox 360 update "will increase performance and is part of our continued effort to provide the best possible Xbox LIVE experience."

In addition, the new update provides a "fix to a color issue that some were experiencing".  After the most recent Xbox 360 Dashboard update, many users were experiencing problems with color space on video playback when using certain Xbox video apps.  Last month, Microsoft acknowledged the colorspace issue and said they were working on a fix.  Nelson says the color fix will be "immediately notable" in the dashboard.

"The fix is also being applied by partners to their apps on Xbox LIVE," said Nelson.  Microsoft expects to roll out the fixes in the "coming months."

When downloading today's update we actually experienced two separate updates.  The first went fairly quickly, but immediately after we were prompted to download another update, which was much larger judging by the time it took to download the second.
