It's getting personal

At the cusp of a new console generation, developer Infinity Ward is attempting to bring the long-standing Call of Duty franchise to the modern age by rebooting the arguably most important series entry with Modern Warfare. The original CoD: Modern Warfare came out an eternity ago in 2007 for last-gen systems. It immediately catapulted the already popular Call of Duty franchise into the stratosphere and became one, if not the most influential game of the past decade. CoD:MW single-handedly made the modern military shooter genre the most popular setting for years upon years. It especially dominated the multiplayer scene like few games before it.

A lot has changed in the past 12 years however, and gaming audiences have shifted towards different multiplayer genres. We’re of course talking about battle royale. PUBG and Fortnite have long taken the crown of being popular trendsetters, which even led to CoD following suit with Black Ops 4.

The series still lost its focus over the years, focusing on evermore futuristic settings and extraordinaire gameplay mechanics. With the new Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward is trying to reset the clock by going back to what made the series so popular to begin with. An unwavering focus on real-world modern military action with a hefty dose of ambiguity and authenticity. It’s still an entertainment product meant to be enjoyed but from what we have seen so far, be prepared for the dirty and cruel gray area of real combat. At least, that seems to be the plan. The return of a full-fledged single-player campaign is something many fans have been waiting for.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release this October 25th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
