Star Wars passes Harry Potter for #2 All-Time at the global box office

#1 will not surprise you in the least.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, despite its divisive fan reception, is raking in money by the barrel full, and showing no signs of slowing down. With all of the profits that Episode VIII has earned, it has officially pushed the franchise past Harry Potter for #2 all-time at the global box office.

The Last Jedi is the tenth theatrically released film in the franchise, following the Original Trilogy, the Prequel Trilogy, the animated Clone Wars movie, The Force Awakens, and Rogue One. Harry Potter, on the other hand, has nine films, with eight movies comprising the seven main books, and the recently released Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Per Star Wars News Net, the current figures are as follows:

  • Star Wars – $8,556,678,930
  • Harry Potter – $8,539,253,704

With Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode IX coming down the pipeline, expect Star Wars to get a fair amount of distance between it and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as the latter will only be releasing one film, the second Fantastic Beasts movie, in the time that Star Wars will have two.

And in case you were wondering, the franchise in first place is, of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With subfranchises churning out three movies a year, built within the singular Marvel banner, it’s a machine that just can’t be stopped.

Solo: A Star Wars Story releases on May 25th, 2017.
