If you thought Duke Nukem Forever killed the prominence of that series, think again. Take-Two plans to continue the cheesy toilet humor FPS franchise. In an interview with Forbes, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed the potential of the series and moving forward with the property.
The Take-Two CEO confirmed that a new Duke Nukem title would launch someday. “We don’t really talk about it in detail but you will see a future Duke IP coming from this company,” said Zelnick. “If we can take our intellectual property and bring it to another medium in an extraordinary high quality way, that delights consumers and represents an interesting commercial opportunity for us, we will.”
Zelnick also addressed the negative criticism the game has received, defending the product despite its low ratings. “That said, when we put something out, I stand behind it, and will not compromise,” said the Take-Two boss. “When you put all those things all together, it’s difficult to be critical of the company. Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want. What is there left to be said? I’m sorry if you don’t like it. Don’t consume it.”
I’m glad that Take-Two isn’t letting the recent failure of Duke Nukem Forever tarnish the brand’s future. Nonsensical games are rare in this medium. I look forward to someday playing a Duke Nukem game and saying, “Wow, this is totally kick-ass. Are these the same people who made Duke Nukem Forever?”
