Sakurai Insists That a New Smash Bros. Is Not in the Works

Back in August we reported that Masahiro Sakurai had stated that he and developer Project Sora were currently focusing all of their efforts on Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS. According to Sakurai, the developer would not be working on a new entry in the Smash Bros. series until development of Uprising was complete. Given the attention to detail that Sakurai likes to give each of his endeavors, that claim is certainly justified.

That said, rumors recently surfaced that ideas for a game titled Super Smash Bros. Universe were currently being discussed. It’s quite possible that this whole thing is a farce created by evil internet hooligans who want nothing more than to raise the hopes of Smash Bros. aficionados everywhere. Either that, or someone was bored and decided to put his Photoshop skills to use.

Sakurai was quick to address these rumors via Twitter, saying, “I’m currently concentrating on one title, Kid Icarus. Until this wraps up, Smash Bros. will not progress. Of course, characters have not been decided at all.”

Now, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Smash Bros. Universe title. But even if the game is a real concept, Sakurai seems intent on finishing development for Uprising and getting that game out for the 3DS. We’re bound to learn more about a new Smash Bros. game, well, when the developer wants us to.
