Rockstar Games’ Agent still listed for PS3 as PlayStation 5 releases

Many moons ago, PlayStation announced they’d have a PS3 exclusive game from Rockstar Games. The game, titled Agent, was supposed to be a riff on James Bond with a Rockstar twist.

“Agent takes players on a paranoid journey into the world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations during the height of the Cold War at the end of the 1970’s,” reads the official description from Rockstar.

The E3 2009 announcement made waves. It came after Microsoft had bragging rights with timed-exclusivity to Grand Theft Auto IV’s huge expansions. Needless to say, it was a win for Sony… until it wasn’t. Months came and went with no news. Months turned into years. Years turned into a decade. On the dawn of the release of PlayStation 5, Rockstar Games still has a webpage for Agent. It still reads “Coming Soon” with a PS3 logo at the bottom.

Obviously, Rockstar is two generations too late. This webpage has been around for years, never updated but also never removed. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, did abandon the trademark for Agent in 2018. One would assume there’s not much movement on that front.

A former Rockstar artist released a few screenshots from the game saying they didn’t believe Agent will ever release. The team was pulled from Agent and moved to Grand Theft Auto V during its development and it seems it was never returned to.

Interestingly enough, Grand Theft Auto V was the last time Rockstar officially acknowledged Agent. In a mission that involves you stealing a James Bond-esque Aston Martin, the car has a license plate that reads “4G3NT”. After the monumental success of Grand Theft Auto V, it seems like Rockstar is going to focus on GTA VI for now.

It’s unclear if Rockstar still owes Sony a PlayStation exclusive title or if they’re paying their debts in timed-exclusive content. PlayStation 5 will feature a standalone version of GTA Online that’s free to PS+ Members for a limited time. Grand Theft Auto V itself will also get a remaster in 2021 for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
