Respawn appears to be working on a new IP

The team behind Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order seems to be developing a new IP. VGC spotted a now deleted job listing that mentioned Respawn is working on a “new IP”.

The listing doesn’t have any real details outside of the fact that Respawn is forming a small team to start working on the IP. The game will apparently also feature “new, practical technologies to enable ‘adventuring forever’.” This could possibly elude to some sort of procedurally generated open world or something like that. Given it’s just a small incubation team right now, it may not be the next game for Respawn.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order released to massive success in 2019, netting over 10 million sales. The game was a departure for the studio which made a name for itself with Titanfall. The beloved FPS series has been dormant since 2016 outside of a battle royale spin-off. Studio head Vince Zampella noted back in May that there’s nothing currently in the works for a third Titanfall game at the moment.

“There’s nothing currently in development,” he told IGN. “But it’s always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen.”

Respawn just released a brand-new VR-exclusive Medal of Honor game. It received mixed reviews but makes pretty great use out of the VR tech. With Star Wars being such a big success for the studio, it seems likely that a sequel will be next for them. Nothing is confirmed but the critical and financial reception surely means EA will want another one sooner rather than later. EA has the Star Wars license until 2023 and then it reverts back to Disney. It’s possible Disney will renew the deal but it’s too soon to say.
