PS4 announcement could come before E3, as early as May

Sony's announcement of a new PlayStation console, presumably the PS4, could be made "at E3 or even earlier in May", hinted Hiroshi Sakamoto.

Speaking to Chilean website El Mercurio Online, Sony VP of Home Entertainment Hiroshi Sakamoto, acknowledged a new PlayStation is "still a big secret, but our friends are preparing Sony PlayStation."

"I can only say that we are focused on the E3 gaming event," he added (as translated by Google). E3 2013 is scheduled for June 11-13 and will take place in Los Angeles. However, he also hinted that an announcement may be made even earlier, possibly in May.

At this point it's unclear whether Sony will announce the console in May and unveil it at E3. Then again, it's also worth noting that Sakamoto may have no idea what he's talking about as he isn't directly involved in the development of the PlayStation. In fact, he works at a different division from the one supposedly developing a new console, so take his words with a grain of salt.

With that being said, it is highly probably that Sony will be revealing the PS4 this year. Whether or not it will be before, during, or after E3 is the big question. Some have even gone so far as to say Sony will reveal the new console at this year's Desintation PlayStation event in February.

The truth of the matter is that outside of the higher-ups at Sony, nobody really knows the exact date. But everyone sure does claim to know.
