While Sony's PlayStation Vita sales continue to slump – selling only 72,000 units last week – things aren't look much better on the software end. Recent Media Create Sales reveal that the PS Vita's game sales are underperforming as well, with no games cracking the Top 30, and only 4 in the Top 50.
The underwhelming sales of the PS Vita could be contributing to the lack of software sales. Despite what many considered to be a "strong" launch lineup, the PS Vita has, for some reason, failed to sell as predicted. As of the week of December 19 to December 25, the four PS Vita games that cracked the Top 50 in sales for Japan were Hot SHots Golf: World Invitational, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Dynasty Warriors Next, and Lord of Apocalypse.
The top performing game for the PS Vita was Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, coming in at the 37th spot. Uncharted: Golden Abyss placed 40th with Dynasty Warriors Next finishing 44th. Lord of Apocolypse placed 49th, 1 spot ahead of the last place SUper Smash Bros. Brawl.
Unfortunately, Media Create does not list specific sales figures for any games outside of the Top 20. In all, Wii software seemed to dominate in sales this week, with 17 in the Top 50.
I think we need to take these numbers with a grain of salt. Though they are definitely lower than many had predicted, it's important to remember that the PS Vita is still brand new in Japan and people are less likely to own one. On the other hand, the Wii has been out for years and more people are likely to own one, which could explain why it dominated.
However, with the Nintendo 3DS outselling the PlayStation Vita 6 to 1, it's hard to predict the Vita's numbers will fair much better this week.
