Battlefield 3 isn't the only game suffering from pirated copies of their game. In a recent report from Venture Beat, it appears as if pirates have also targeted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Though CoD MW3 doesn't officially launch until November 8th, pirates have already optained copies of one of the most-anticipated game's of the year.
According to the report, the PC versionof Modern Warfare 3 has been circulating among pirates in the U.S. Though Activision is still expected to sell more than 20 million copies of the game in 2011 alone, amounted to about $1.2 billion in retail sales, it's always questioned how much higher than number could be had it not been for pirates.
Piracy, especially for PC games, has always been a problem in the video game industry. Most recently, we've estimated DICE has lost a potential $2,000,000 in sales due to Battlefield 3 torrents. Despite developers and publishers monitoring manufacturers in the weeks leading up to shipments, it's virtually impossible to stop leaks and pirated copies from spreading.
Apparently, pirated discs began to spread after an employee at a shipping warhouse in Fresno, California stole one disc, though rumors have it that it was Disc 2 of a two-disk set for hte PC. Similar cases occurred last year before hte launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but sales of Activision's most successful franchise have continued to set records in sales.
