Notch wants to track your Minecraft gameplay

Today, Notch introduced the idea of tracking player's gameplay in Minecraft, or what he phrased as "letting us snoop".  Currently, Mojang has no idea how people are "playing the Minecraft", with their tracking login ability only giving a rough idea of what people are doing with the game.

"I was thinking it would be awesomely cool to add some kind of player tracking to the game," Notch said in a recent blog update.

"This would work by having the game connect to minecraft.net and send some anonymous and non-private data about the game, such as current game mode (single player, multiplayer), operating system (windows? mac?), how long you’ve been playing for (so we know how long a game session is), and whether or not you’re playing the downloaded game, or the applet on the webpage," he explained. "It would probably connect every ten minutes or so so we can get some semi-realtime data. We’d share the data with the community, as usual."

Of course, tracking player data is always a risky concept for consumers.  Many don't like the idea of a company being able to "snoop" or track what they are doing with their PC.

Not assured fans, "the data sent will be fully anonymous, so it wouldn’t contain any session information or your user name, and it wouldn’t send any sensitive information that you might not want to share."

As with most things Minecraft, Notch intends on listening to the fans, so here's your chance to voice your opinion.  Notch wants to know if you'd be ok with them tracking your gameplay.  You can vote on the official blog here.

As of right, the general Minecraft population seems pretty ok with the idea.  5,951 players, or 87.44% of votes casted, voted "Yes,that sounds cool", while 855 voted "no that sounds evil".
