Walk of Game

Legendary game developer and id Software co-owner
and technical director, John Carmack, will be awarded a star for Lifetime
Achievement on Walk of Game on Thursday, March 16. The ceremony will take place
at Walk of Game, the destination honoring leaders of the video game industry,
located inside San Francisco’s Metreon, a mecca for the gaming community.

Carmack and the other 2006 inductees will be
honored at a reception at Metreon, where the stars will be unveiled. The 2005
inductee for Lifetime Achievement, Nolan Bushnell (co-founder of Atari and
creator of Pong), will headline the event. In addition to Carmack, Walk of Game
will induct Sid Meier (creator of Civilization®) for Lifetime Achievement, and
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), StarCraft®, Final Fantasy and EverQuest® as favorite

Among his many accomplishments, rendering
technology developed by Carmack stands at the forefront of gaming evolution.
Since 1996, id Software’s technology platforms, including the QUAKE® series of
engines and the DOOM 3® engine, have been used in nearly 100 products and
accounted for more than 30 million units and well over $1 billion of game
industry revenue worldwide. Game technology developed by Carmack and id Software
has been used in every id Software title released as well as Half-Life, Star
Wars: Jedi Knight II, Call of Duty, and many other popular games.

Through Carmack’s initiative, id Software was the
first company to release source code to the online community of fans – fostering
and developing a group of aspiring programmers, artists and designers. id
Software has freely released its entire source code base for every technology
through the QUAKE III Arena engine through the General Public License.
