Dying Light: The Following ‘Nightmare mode’ ramps up the difficulty

The most challenging and cruel face of Dying Light

There's an even harder mode coming to Dying Light with the upcoming expansion. Revealed today as the conclusion to Techland's video series highlighting new features in Dying Light: The Following, "Nightmare Mode" looks to deliver fans the "ultimate challenge" they've asked for.

"It is a whole new difficulty level for those who fear nothing and seek the ultimate challenge," Techland says of the mode.

“We’ve designed the Nightmare Mode for those seeking a really challenging and immersive experience. Nightmare Mode takes everything that was brutal in our Hard Mode and twists it even more," added producer Tymon Smektała. “We’re trying to bring the Dying Light experience closer and closer to the feeling of a real apocalypse survival experience where every move you make can really determine if you live or die."

Nightmare Mode takes all of the changes made with Hard Mode — longer nights, stronger enemies, and lesser reliance on the survivor sense and mini-map — and makes it even more difficult by making active skills use up your stamina. Additionally, no overpowered Easter Egg weapons are allowed. And lastly, each death will cancel all of the experience points above your current level, so don't die.

So what's the incentive to play this hardened difficulty? FOr starters, you'll gain experience points at a much faster rate and earn a 10% experience bonus for each co-op partner you have playing with you (up to 30% total). Also, your favorite Golden weapons are more abundant than ever in this mode.

Nightmare Mode is one of three key new features in Dying Light: The Following. Previous videos covered Legendary Levels and Bounties. Although this is the last in Techland's video series featuring enhancement highlights, Techland says there much more to look forward to. Last week, the developer confirmed that certain community-made maps will be available on consoles.

Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition launches February 9, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and will be available boxed and digital. Players who already have the base version of the game will be able to buy expansion Dying Light: The Following individually as downloadable content for $19.99 or as part of the Season Pass.
