Aonuma: Working on new Zelda, but Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword in HD could happen if someone else does it

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which has an HD remake coming out on the Wii U on September 20, wasn't the only Zelda game that series lead Eiji Aonuma's team experiemented with. According to an interview with Polygon, Aonuma and his team experimented with three existing Zelda games while working on graphics approaches for the next Zelda Wii U.

In the interview, Aonuma said, "When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we're actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen. In doing so we realized that the Wind Waker graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life."

But what were the other two games that they experimented with? Well, we know The Wind Waker HD started as a tech demo; the other two were 2006's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Both of them are Wii titles. It's promising that one of the three experimented games got made into an HD remake for the Wii U, but Aonuma said that it doesn't mean Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword will also get HD treatment. The Wind Waker HD makes more sense, too, because the game is from 2003, not as recent as the other two.

As for the other two, Aonuma said, "I can't say that the possibility is zero that those will be made into HD, but right now I need to work on the next installation in the series so I don't have the bandwidth to do that right now. But maybe it will happen if someone else does it."
