What universe are you living in? How in the world did Steam make games cheaper in the PC world with their DRM and digital delivery? Have you ever...
@austerus: well, I think it's pretty clear that I'm not an economist, so this is all speculation and guess-work, backed by a decent amount of time spent on Steam, and a lifetime of being a console and PC gamer. Agree with you entirely on the point of "a company's role is to provide a service, and the market's role is to decide the viability of that service" (paraphrasing). Also agree that pushing all that overhead onto the consumer is a baaaaad thing, but since the consumer base obviously has some say in the planning process now, I have to ask whether we have the potential to move the conversation into more productive territory -- exactly as you've been doing in this conversation :D.

There are a lot of assumptions you're making here though, I know you mentioned it is hard to believe it would happen but really. Who is to say that...
Oh, in my heart of hearts I know MS was never going to take those steps voluntarily. I have a hard time imagining any exec waking up in the morning and saying, "I know, I'll slash my own profit margins!" I just wonder whether the torch mob could have pushed the conversation into that grey area instead of where we ended up?

Much of the inflated price point of a game is to make up for potential future sales outside the original publisher's monetary purview. Remove that consideration, and you can/do actually drive costs down for the end user. Not saying Steam is cheaper across the board -- they're still protecting margins and the overall cost anchoring of full titles -- but their model facilitates deep sales that they can use to boost loyalty to their service, etc.

Can't disagree with you there -- though MS really did make their own bed with the messaging around it all. All the major outlets did report quite a bit off Xbox Wire as the specs were dropping, but even then, hate/bile/memes are easy to fire off into forums, and will drown out any conversation.

Oh look, another hackneyed "journo" looking for hits off the back of the DRM turnaround. Admitting your hypocrisy makes you no less of a hypocrite....
