To finish off my comments: all's well that ends well. I checked out my Xbox account online; it stated i had the demo in a queue for download. I tried downloading it, but was told it was in a queue for a different console. That didn't make any sense to me, as I have only one Xbox, but straightened things out.... and lo, the download finally began.

tried inputting the code directly on the Xbox but was told that the code had already been redeemed. Still no sign of the Demo under "My Games" or anywhere else that I know of....
