Thank you for having the courage to say this. Recently I tried to play the game, it the second chance I've given it and I just couldn't take it. As you said the combat contradicts itself. The cover system is so broken that it's hardly there and when you finally get an ally into cover they don't use it, not even when their shield is down. This doesn't change much though because the enemy AI just overrun your position anyway. The weapon mechanics are also awful. I chose to use infiltrator, little good that did me. Five hours into the game I've spent as many points as possible for my level on the Sniper skill and the weapon sway still means I can't shoot a damn thing, switching to pistol is no help either because the damn thing overheats so fast. It seems that everyone who reviewed this game were blinded by their Bioware Fanboy-ness. People use the "It's an RPG" excuse for the combat but that's not enough. I don't go into an RPG expecting the gun play to be as good as Gears or Halo but I expect it to work and be fun and Mass Effect doesn't tick these boxes.
