Good point. The book does give much more insight into the thoughts and emotions of Katniss thanks to its first-person viewpoint.

Really? You found the film to be dumbed down and fast-paced? I found that the movie placed less of an emphasis on action and focused more on character development and story, which is what I look for in a good film.
