While it’s true that the videogame industry has come down with a pretty ferocious case of sequelitis, there are a few games that have come out over the years that show that just because a title is a sequel, that doesn’t mean that it can revolutionize gaming in some pretty incredible ways. Here’s a list of some sequels that outshined their predecessors by a huge degree:

 

Spider-Man® 2
The webslinger’s sequel put players into a huge open-world, and stands among the best superhero-based games ever.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
While the series definitely had its roots in WWII, Call of Duty 4 aimed its sights at more recent conflict, and stands as one of the most intense and engaging FPS games around.
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 was a huge departure for the franchise, changing the series’ tried-and-true mechanics in favor of a more action oriented approach. The gamble paid off, as Resident Evil 4 quickly became the most beloved entry in the storied franchise.
