Sonic 4: SEGA & Dimps Developing; Plus: Rumored Impressions?

Microsoft caused a bit of a stir among Sonic fans recently when it revealed on its website that the developer of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 would be none other than Dimps, who some would argue were responsible for most of the "good" Sonic games of the past decade. However, SEGA contests that this is not the full story. Speaking with Joystiq (via GoNintendo), the company elaborated that "Sonic 4 Episode I is being developed by Sonic Team in cooperation with Dimps." TSSZ News reveals a more elaborate answer given by SEGA of America Community Manager RubyEclipse on the company's forum. Check that and more out after the cut.

SEGA Slashes 40% Off PlayStation Network and Virtual Console Stock

If you're a fan of SEGA, then do they ever have a Christmas special for you. From today (following the PlayStation Store update) until January 7th, they are marking 40% off all their titles and downloadable content available on the PlayStation Network. They are doing the same with titles on the Wii's Virtual Console, but that only lasts from Christmas Eve through the 6th of January.

Week-Ending Game Endings - 12.18.09 - Mega Man, Genesis Style

With the reveal of Mega Man 10 this week, as well as the 22nd birthday of the Blue Bomber taking place yesterday, I thought a fitting Week-Ending Game Ending would be one from one of his many adventures. And what better place to go than the start? However, I wanted to do something slightly different from the norm. So here is the ending to the original Mega Man game... as recreated in Mega Man: The Wily Wars for the SEGA Genesis: The unfortunate thing about The Wily Wars is that it never saw a proper release in North America; it was released at retail in Europe and Japan (under the banner of "Rockman Mega World"), but the only way to play it in North America was to subscribe to the SEGA Channel, whose service was rather sparse, to say the least. While the originals are all available on the Wii Virtual Console (among other means), and are usually regarded as superior, I still want this to be released to the service for one main reason: Wily Tower. In addition to the enhanced versions of the three NES titles, there were a series of new levels featuring bosses based on the novel "Journey to the West." Plus, you could select any assortment of weapons and items from the other three games. And who wouldn't want to shell over a few bucks for that experience? Have a great weekend, everyone!

Media: SEGA Reveals Sonic Classic Collection for DS

It appears that some of the rumors and theories surrounding the registration of "Sonic Classic Collection" with the BBFC were indeed true after all. Today, SEGA Europe announced the title, which will be hitting their shelves in March 2010; as of this writing, SEGA America has yet to say anything about a release over here. It brings together the four main SEGA Genesis Sonic titles, "optimised to take full advantage of the Nintendo DS system" by letting players save anywhere at any time, plus videos and "collectible pictures" for fans. But, there seems to be something they aren't telling us; check out the pic from Sonic & Knuckles; could this version introduce some new form of co-op or competition between Sonic and his friendly rival, Knuckles? We'll have to wait and see.

SEGA Announces "Project Needlemouse," a New 2D HD Sonic Title

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the U.S. launch of the SEGA Dreamcast, and SEGA has found an interesting way to mark the occasion. Though SEGA apparently knows that the buttering of their Sonic bread comes from a younger, arguably less-discerning crowd, that hasn't stopped them attempting to appease the franchise's older fans in some capacity. However, for some time now, it seems that the cries of "make a new 2D Sonic game (that's not for a handheld)" has only fallen on deaf ears. Or has it? Last night, SEGA revealed "Project Needlemouse" to GameStop via the following trailer: For those unable to view it, the trailer (which opens with the classic "SE-GA!" voice, rather than the dryer modern version) promises "speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up." It then depicts a silhouette which resembles the classic opening screen "wings" icon of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for SEGA Genesis before displaying "2010," with each "0" represented by a spinning golden ring.

Wanted Designer Trashes Third-Party Development on Wii; Compares to Genesis vs. PS3/360

With their latest console, the Wii, Nintendo has boasted the opportunity for developers to have a platform which is less graphics-intensive and thus easier to develop for, and also easier to turn a profit on. However, it seems that not everyone sees it that way. Appearing on a recent episode of GameTrailers' Invisible Walls, designer Peter Wanat (of Scarface, Chronicles of Riddick, and Wanted: Weapons of Fate fame) expressed how it is impossible for anyone but Nintendo and Ubisoft (by virtue of their Petz line) to turn a profit on the console. He goes on to add that if a developer spends $300-$500K on a game for the platform, they will not see a return due to "how badly third-party Wii games sell."
