The producer of Super Street Fighter IV confirmed today through an interview that Capcom doesn’t have any plans for a PC version due to piracy concerns. This sort of goes contrary to what may happen with other versions of the game and Capcom in general. Andriasang translated the comments from Japanese site 4Gamer which interviewed Yoshinori Ono over the latest version of Super Street Fighter IV for the arcade which will add new characters. He said that the only way Capcom would release a PC version of Super Street Fighter IV would be if they found an effective DRM solution. Ono also said that they wouldn’t use Steamworks because he doesn’t want to exclude those who might not be able to buy it over Steam.
The NPD has reported that digital distribution sales for full-size games on the PC have for the first time surpassed retail as major digital vendors on that platform continue to grow. Between January and June 2010, the NPD counted that PC gamers bought around 11.2 million games digitally compared to 8.2 million boxed games. All the way up until last year, more PC games sold at brick-and-mortar vendors than digital. The NPD reported that in all of 2009 PC gamers bought around 21.3 million full games digitally and around 23.5 million from retail.
Tokyo Game Show hasn't been a disappointment, and here is another big news item that should get a passionate group of fans excited. Sega has announced that they will be developing Phantasy Star Online 2. Phantasy Star Online was the big game that really executed on the promise of the Dreamcast's built in modem, it was an online RPG that allowed four players to team up and go space-dungeon (or SPdungeon) crawling and loot-whoring. In the video above we see a lot of footage from Phantasy Star Portable 2 before they show the big announcement that PSO2 is a real thing. Some with fuzzier memories may believe that Sega already released a PSO2, but that was actually Phantasy Star Online Episode 2, and not a true sequel.Â
Chime was one of the more creative takes on the puzzle game genre in recent years. Combining the placement of awkwardly-shaped blocks of Tetris with the beat-based musical gameplay of Lumines produced an entertaining, addictive game. Even better, just by purchasing the game, gamers were doing a good thing. Royalties from the game benefited publisher OneBigGame's charity partners the Starlight Children's Foundation and Save The Children. Today, OneBigGame have announced that following the success of Chime on Xbox LIVE Arcade, the game is going to make the jump to Windows PCs. It'll be released via Steam and available towards the end of the summer. Hit the jump—it makes a nice "ting" noise—for more.
Treyarch confirmed last week that the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops will allow mods, unlike Modern Warfare 2. This opens up a whole other can of questions regarding the future economics of the game. Treyarch made the confirmation on the Call of Duty forums. Mods won’t be available immediately upon launch. “We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch,†they said. “Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game.†At the end of the announcement they also confirmed that Black Ops will allow the development console.
