Mafia II Review

Organized crime is often romanticized just like pirates and cowboys. Not only does Mafia work make for compelling gameplay moments in video game, but the stories that are woven with honor among thieves, sense of family belonging, a chance at a glitzy life and the looming shadow of brutality make for compelling narratives. This is most likely the same essence 2K Czech was trying to capture with the release of Mafia II. Most of the emphasis in Mafia II is placed on the story and setting, to the detriment of the overall gameplay. Mafia II puts players in the role of Vito Scaletta. Born in Italy, brought to America, he always had a knack for running into trouble. He was picked up by the police after a smash and grab went wrong and enlisted into World War II. After returning from war after getting shot, he falls into the criminal underworld as a means of paying off his family debt. Over the course of ten years of Vito’s life, players assume control of him as he gets deeper into the seedy underbelly of organized crime and makes a name for himself. However, instead of loving his new life of crime, Vito is more introspective and will have the player agonizing over some of his poor choices.

MGS5 a Prequel? Doubtful (Minor MGS4 Spoilers, Sort of)

Those of you who have played and conquered Solid Snake's latest adventure know that Kojima and co. managed to tie up the series' plot threads so tightly that not even an Eagle Scout could untie them. (That's why they have knives). Those same people -- MGS fans, not Boy Scouts -- know that MGS3 is the best game in the series (Yeah, I said it). So, following that logic, another MGS prequel only makes sense, right? Wrong. First, let's check out the quote from Ryan Payton. "I'm happy we could wrap up Snake's story in MGS4," Payton stated an interview with 1UP, "because it gets to the point where if we continue on with Metal Gear Solid 5 with more Solid Snake adventures, we'll get to the point where the game has absolutely no basis in reality. I do like the idea that this character has had four or five big missions and then that's when it ended, rather than have 20 missions where there's no chance in hell a secret agent could ever survive. He's had four or five really big missions, and that seems a little more realistic to me." Would a prequel make sense here? Sure, but where was that implied? Payton is against continuing Snake's tale because he fears it will venture away from reality. However, that fear doesn't stem from wild technology – MGS4 already covered that ground more than a few times over – but from Snake's odd knack for not keeling over. Thus, flashing into the future doesn't really present a problem. Snake's inordinately thick book may be closing, but what about other characters in the series? After all, one of MGS4's big themes was the future -- not just cooler guns and shinier Macs, but the passage of peoples' lives, the older generation passing our world onto the new generation's shoulders. Snake's done, but his youthful compatriots are only getting started. Spoilery parts after the break.
