The Wild Thornberrys Movie - PC - Review

The Wild Thornberrys Movie for the PC is a collection of ten arcade games loosely tied together by the movie story line of the same name. Just as in the upcoming movie, Eliza will travel all around the world, rescuing animals from poachers and helping her friends.

Upon game startup, players can choose to begin the story mode, play mini-games or try the multi-player games with some friends. The story mode takes Eliza on an adventure centered around playing various arcade games in order. As the game advances, the activities that have been successfully completed can be played again in any order. Each activity is introduced by the Shaman, who serves to tie the games together to fit the movie the game is based on. The games are all arcade and pretty similar in format - most involve moving people or objects around to collect items, chase things or lob items at people. A few of the games resemble mazes. For the most part, the games are easy to play once the rules are learned. The mini-games are the standard sliding puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, arcade races and other types often found in children's games. The three multi-player games are two racing games and one maze game.

The premise of this game is to offer kids lots of action-oriented games while enjoying the story from the movie. The problem is that the games themselves are pretty bland and don't offer much in the way of excitement. The story mode is very weak, especially if children haven't seen the movie yet (which hasn't been released yet as of this review) and doesn't add anything to the gameplay. For the most part, kids will spend their time using arrow keys to move Eliza, Darwin or objects around to collect items, win a race or find things. The reasons why these games aren't very interesting to play is hard to quite put a finger on, but the similarity of each coupled with the extreme simplicity of play is part of the problem. However, simplicity alone isn't always a negative issue, Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games is a collection of simple arcade games, but they are very fun and addictive. In fact, if parents are looking for some just-for-fun arcade games on the computer for their young children, Timon & Pumbaa is a much better buy than The Wild Thornberry's Movie, and will keep their interest much longer. The Wild Thornberrys Movie is a wholly mediocre game and parents should resist their children's urgings to buy it.

Gameplay: 6
The gameplay is easy to learn with a good interface, but unfortunately it's quite boring, too.

Graphics: 8
The graphics are the only nice thing about this game, they're very well done. But, graphics do not a game make.

Sound: 7
The sound is decent enough.

Difficulty: Easy
The game is easy to learn and play.

Concept: 6
Just another collection of arcade games for kids based on a popular TV/movie offering, and one that doesn't offer anything new or exciting.

Multiplayer: Yes
Three mini-games are offered for multi-player mode.

Overall: 6
A very mundane game and one that really has nothing to recommend.
