Using the robust StarCraft II modding tools, Ryan Winzen began work on a World of StarCraft mod. Once the mod was far enough along, he posted a demo of the new game on YouTube, garnering quite a lot of attention and fan praise.
Unfortunately, he also grabbed Activision Blizzard's attention, who immediately slapped him with a cease and desist, forcing YouTube to remove the video.
Winzen has request that Blizzard allow him to continue to develop a game called World of StarCraft. "I know it's hard to trust someone you've never met to piggyback on your own legacy... Let me assure you that I am in no way shape or form going to deliver anything less than complete perfection (edit: close to perfection)," he wrote. "Furthermore, if you like this idea and would be willing to grant me a seal of approval to continue... that would be wonderful. I won't let you down."
Although it's lame that the publisher is suddenly restricting StarCraft II mods after allowing many other non-Activision Blizzard IPs to be recreated in their game, it's extremely naive of this kid to expect his project to rival the heights of an actual Blizzard title. Even if World of StarCraft isn't planned for a retail release, Blizzard no doubt wants to preserve the brand.
Honestly, I'm not sure who to root for here.
