First on-set image of RoboCop suit looks nothing like RoboCop

My friends call me Murphy, you can call me — what the f*ck?! That's not RoboCop! At least, it's not the RoboCop we all know. ComingSoon.net provided the whole world with the first looks at the new RoboCop suit that Jole Kinnaman will be wearing in the Jose Padilha-directed RoboCop. Needless to say, it looks nothing like the RoboCop suit from the 80s.

Gone is the silver and black we know. Put in its place is an all black suit that looks like the Batman suit on crack. Or the villains from the Total Recall remake. Or a more streamlined Judge Dredd outfit. I'm not saying it looks bad; I'm just saying that I didn't expect this. It looks more like a suit of futuristic armor than a cyborg to me.

There's been a lot of controversy surrounding RoboCop recently, with some casting issues (which have been resolved) and the director thinking this project is hell (which has been denied). Regardless, the cast is of all-star caliber and the film has a lot of hype around it. And these pictures are sure to stir up some controversy and keep people talking about it.

The official synopsis for the new RoboCop is:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

One difference is that in the 1987 movie, Alex Murphy was killed, not critically injured. And since he was dead, they used him to make RoboCop. In this one, they're doing it to save his life, supposedly. So since the story around the creation of RoboCop has changed a bit, it makes sense for a visual change of the suit. It sounds like more of RoboCop's body will be human, thus a more human physique for the suit.

RoboCop is set for an August 9, 2013 release. What do you think of RoboCop's new look?
