Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - PS3 - Preview

E3 2007 Preview

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is the most illusive Star Wars game. We now know that the game will feature a secret apprentice of Darth Vader. Pause and think about it for a minute. What did Yoda say in Episode I? "Always two, there are no more, no less -- a master and an apprentice." Darth Vader is Darth Sidious's apprentice and is not supposed to have one of his own.

LucasArts isn't ready to tell us much more than that, but they did show an awesome teaser trailer with CG clips and a 30-second peak at the gameplay engine (and it is stunning!). The trailer began with this new, mysterious Sith Lord attempting to use every ounce of his power. He was taking on an unusually large task, one that no other Sith Lord -- or even a Jedi -- has attempted. When players finally see what's going on, there are no words that can describe their reaction. Mine was something like a freeze frame, with my body suspended for a second or two. The Sith Lord, with a Force unlike any other, pulled a Star Destroyer from space down to a planet! It crashes into buildings and abolishes a sizable chunk of the city in the process. How in the world is this possible? Either he is potentially the most dangerous ally to the Dark Side, or he has one heck of a tractor beam hidden underneath his cloak.

The gameplay portion of The Force Unleashed will feature the most realistic creatures of any Star Wars game. Expect Gears of War-quality textures, jaw-dropping backgrounds, and the finest animations and lightsaber / Force effects ever seen in this galaxy.
