Do you have what it takes to be a Jedi Knight? Will you walk the fine line between the good and dark sides of the Force, or become a rogue – victim to your own desires and not what is good for the universe.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is obviously part of the Star Wars universe, and is an RPG based on the Wizard of the Coast pen-and-paper RPGS. It is a tale that begins in the early days of the known history of the Star Wars saga, long before the rise of the Galactic Empire.
This game was demonstrated for GameZone at E3 2002 in Los Angeles.
In the final war between Jedi and Sith, you take a group of freedom fighters across the galaxy, through 10 worlds from Tatooine to the dark Sith homeworld. Armed with a variety of weapons, including a lightsaber and the mystical might of the Force, it is up to you to engage the enemy.
Sometimes combat skill is not enough, and therein lies the joy of wielding the awesome power of the Force. There will be times when you will use the Force to use more passive skills, like the power of persuasion, to advance through the game.
While Knights of the Old Republic is a RPG, there are some arcade elements in the game. There are shops to purchase inventory items to advance your characters progress. You can have up to three characters in your party.
Those who are familiar with the style of LucasArts game animation will instantly recognize the rendering techniques used for this game. There are some sharp elements to the look of the game, but overall the visual impact was solid, and provided yet another example of solid third-person visuals. There are puzzles to solve and more than 200 NPCs, which help advance the game’s storyline.
The audio elements were typical of Star Wars games – very solid.
While not perhaps the best of the bunch that LucasArts demonstrated at E3, this product certainly will appeal to Star Wars fans and will be available on the Xbox in the fall, and on PC in Spring 2003.
