Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - PS2 - Preview

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is the third title in the Star Ocean series and marks the series first entry to the PS2.  It is also the first fully 3D game in the series, making the game as visually beautiful as it is fun to play.  Like its predecessor, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Till the End of Time features a Real-Time combat engine, providing fast and intense action.

 

While story details are a bit scant, from what I know Star Ocean: Till the End of Time takes place 400 years in the future as a young man named Fate looks for his lost loved ones throughout the galaxy.  The preview build that I played took place in what looked like a huge crystalline fortress in outer space, which looked really cool and had a very unique atmosphere.

 

As I said earlier, the combat system in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is fully real-time, meaning a lot of the game’s battle strategy consists of positioning yourself the right way so as not to get hit by your opponent.  The preview had three playable characters on screen, and I was able to switch between them with the push of a button.  The characters that I wasn’t currently playing with were still active, and attacked the enemy with surprisingly adaptive AI.  The characters each had unique fighting abilities as well.  For example, one used his fists to fight (like Zell from Final Fantasy VIII) and one had magical healing abilities.

 

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time stands to transition the series to the PS2 with great form.  Fans of Star Ocean should keep a watchful eye out for this one when it hits this fall.
