Star Fox Command - NDS - Preview
E3 2006 First Look Preview
Going into E3 I wondered what Nintendo could have up its sleeves. Most of their trademark games had already been covered on the DS – Mario was on its way, a new Zelda was announced, and all the others (Metroid, Mario Kart, Advance Wars, etc.) had already been released. Aside from sequels of sequels, I couldn’t think of too many titles for the DS to draw from.
Somehow or other I completely forgot about the Star Fox series. Started on the SNES and perfected on Nintendo 64, Star Fox is an arcade-style flight/combat game. The original ran on a special FX chip that allowed the SNES to show 3D images. The latest, Star Fox DS, will be coming to the DS in full force. In other words: flight controls have been designated to the stylus!
Drag the stylus in any direction to make your ship fly in any direction. Nothing about the story was revealed, but I suspect you’ll be in control of Fox McCloud. If not, you can bet he’ll play a major role in the game. He’s not as important a character as Mario or Link, but he started with the series and should continue to be a part of it.
In addition to standard flight controls, players will be able to use their stylus to perform cool flight maneuvers. Drag the stylus quickly left and right and the ship will perform a spin. This is likely an evasive technique that’ll come in handy during heated battles that are destined to occur.
Graphically the game is rich with polygons, solid ship models and villains, and minor explosions. The explosions aren’t as potent or as pretty as in other DS titles, which could be attributed to the fact that this is a very early demo.
Due for release sometime in the distant future, Star Fox DS is another Nintendo staple that’s been drastically changed by touch screen controls.
