Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters - PSP - Preview 2

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is the first game from the series to make it to the PSP. An original game set after the events in Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked, Size Matters features all of the fun and action of previous games in the franchise, and offers up some great multiplayer features as well. Fans of the series will be able to tote it around in portable form once Size Matters hits store shelves.

From a gameplay standpoint, Ratched and Clank: Size Matters plays a lot like the console versions and operates with much of the same mechanics. The game will offer the solid platforming elements of the series, complete with Clank’s repertoire of extra moves, like helicopter hovering. You’ll also have access to melee weapons like wrenches as well as a variety of guns and ranged weapons.

Size Matters will feature a brand new armor system. You’ll be able to gain special traits for the wrenches and armor that you find and equip, like fire armor and ice wrenches. These can be mixed and matched with other armor types for some interesting combinations with different traits, or you can go all decked out with a specific type (like the aforementioned fire or ice) to get a maximum boost.

The game will offer some pretty good online features via both ad-hoc and infrastructure modes. You’ll be able play deathmatch and team deathmatch modes, but the best new addition to the online element is the Iron Lombax mode, which gives you unique competitive goals based on the stage that you happen to be in. There is also a “nemesis” tracking system that will mark the person who has killed you the most online and let you track them and even challenge them to a one-on-one grudge match.

Graphically, the game does a great job of packing in a lot of detail to the PSP. The character models look as good as they do in the console version, and the environments are pretty sharp, too. Size Matters will use the same voice actors and music composers as the PS2 games, making for even more of a seamless audio transition.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is shaping up to be a solid PSP platformer in the same vein of Daxter and will definitely be a title that fans will want to check out.
