PAX Prime 2011: Gotham City Impostors Is A Fun Play
Remember the teaser trailer from The Incredibles when the retired Mr. Incredible attempts to fit back into his supersuit, but can’t because he’s packed on too much weight? That is the scene that came to mind as I previewed Gotham City Impostors at PAX Prime. As the war between the Bats and the Jokerz raged on PAX, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the creative, impersonations of two of my favorite comic book characters.
Gotham City Impostors is a humorous take on the rivalry of two arch enemies, Batman and Joker. That rivalry was shown off at PAX during a five on five demo of Fumigation. Up until now, I didn’t know what to expect from the Gotham City Impostors in terms of gameplay, but after my first match I can safely say that it’s a hell of a fun play.
While the gameplay is nothing groundbreaking, sometimes a fun, simplistic shooter is all you need. And that is what Gotham City Impostors offers. It offers a good time for people just looking to unleash some rage on others. The matches are quick, the maps are small, and the gameplay is fairly simplistic.
In its most basic form, it’s your standard aim and shoot game. It’s even easier than that as the combat features assisted aiming. Of course, the game does offer multiple game modes, and at PAX I was able to demo Fumigation mode.
Fumigation mode places three gas blasters (a themed version of capture points) around the map. Your goal is to hang around them long enough for your team to claim them. Upon capturing, the blaster begins to shoot your teams gas into the air. The goal is for your team to reach 100% fumigation in the air in the allotted time, effectively reducing your enemies to 0%.
Like I mentioned, the game plays pretty standard. The key to this mode is moving quickly and this is where Impostors really stands out. Gotham City Impostors offers multiple ways to move about the city and rooftops. The grapple gun can be used to zip you up to the rooftops. The glide wings let you coast along whenever you jump. And scattered around the map are trampolines allowing you to get the high ground advantage over your enemies.

Upon losing the game (I actually played against a team with a guy dressed as the Joker – how can you beat that?), what I did in the match contributed to my experience and overall level. As you level, you will unlock new weapons, gadgets, and support items. Along with that, you can also earn costume points to spend on new aesthetic items. There is actually quite a bit to unlock also.
For an XBLA/PSN game, Gotham City Impostors looks to offer a load of fun for a cheap price. It features fun gameplay and a pretty in-depth level system, especially for a downloadable game. Gotham City Impostors is a fun play and I suggest checking it out.
