Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers - WII - Preview
E3 2008 Preview
Zombie games are hard to pull off. They're not a specific genre, but when thrown into anything but a horror game you're creating the risk for gruesomeness that turns off some players and/or cheesiness that turns off those who just want it to be gruesome. That hasn't stopped many developers from trying. Early next year, Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers will come stateside with all the gore you'd expect from a game with "zombie" and "slayers" in the title.
This game is fairly early and wasn't playable, however, D3 was able to show us what the gameplay will be like. Onechanbara is a hack-n-slash game, but it's not played from a fixed camera perspective. The viewing angle stays behind the two main characters, Aya and Saki, two sexy slayers who love wearing bikinis. During the preview, several zombies attacked Aya and were wiped out with various sword attacks (quick stabs, a sideways swing, etc.). The zombies weren't as realistic as they are in Resident Evil and certainly weren't on par with Dead Rising, but still looked pretty good. Cheesiness wasn't a factor.
One of the more graphic features of Onechanbara causes the zombie-slaying sisters to lose their clothes. In the old days, this might've slipped by the ESRB. But with their eyes watching everything publishers do, D3 couldn't get away with having a couple naked chicks in the game. Thus, the developers came up with a mature way of covering their bare bods: blood. As you slice through enemies, their blood gets splattered all over the area. When the blood hits Aya or Saki, it'll turn their bodies to a red silhouette. One developer described the look as being syrupy. So you can get a peak at their shape, but the full R-rated content of a movie is not allowed in this M-rated game.
At the moment, D3 can only confirm the playable characters that were previously announced (the slayer sisters). However, they did say that there could be more on the way. We'll keep you posted.
