Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus - PSP - Preview
E for All 2007 Preview
Solid Snake has certainly been no stranger to the PSP. With the original Metal Gear Ac!d offering it’s blend of action and strategy elements to the system at launch up to last year’s Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops re-creating the series’ token stealth action gameplay, the PSP has gotten a fair amount of love from the series. Following up last year’s title is Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops +, an expansion of sorts that offers new online modes, a brand-new single player element, and interactivity with last year’s MGS: Portable Ops. The game seems like a logical progression from its predecessor, and should be a worthy investment for fans.
The new single-player element in Portable Ops Plus is the Infinity Mode, which as the name implies is a never-ending sequence of battles geared to beefing up a party of characters that you select. As you progress through this mode, you’ll unlock new weapons and gain new abilities for your characters, giving them more strength in the multiplayer modes, which is really what this expansion is all about.
The new multiplayer elements include added maps and gameplay modes, like the Shooting Range-style deathmatch game, and the ability to play as new characters, including Raiden and Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4. You can even import your party from the original MGS Portable Ops and tweak them using the new features in MGS Portable Ops +, which is a nice touch.
Graphically, the game is unchanged from the original, but still stands as one the best looking PSP games around, thanks to well animated character models and good attention to detail. Fans of the series looking to improve their online game can look forward to Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + next month.
