Back in the year 2000, Majesty released. It was a game that allowed players to build a fantasy kingdom up in power and prestige. Obviously the years have passed but the game is still revered and Paradox has heard the RTS community when it wished that someone would update the game.

Guess what? In September, Majesty 2 should ship to retailers. This is a game that builds off the first game, taking place about 100 years after the original installment. An evil demon has taken over your kingdom and you are tasked with taking it back.

The game has a fair amount of humor in it, but it is founded on the idea of indirect control of your units. For example, your people have a number of heroes in their midst. You can’t just order the heroes to go kill a certain mob. You have to put a bounty on that mob and then hope your heroes go off in an effort to kill the mob and collect the bounty.

The game has been tweaked in several areas with new characters, new game mechanics and more flags. Heroes can be resurrected and can be formed into parties. There are 16 missions and a host of side missions.

According to the Paradox press release, other features include:

  • Choose from more than 10 different classes to oversee the protection of your lands.

  • Multiplayer for up to 4 players over LAN or Internet, including support for ranking ladders and tournaments.

According to Paradox’s PR, the development team “really tried to pull the game into the 21st century with updated 3D graphics and a modern AI.”

Yes, the game does look very nice with lush environments and solid spell effects.

Majesty 2 is slated to release in September and should be a perfect entry point for anyone looking to experience the RTS genre for the first time, as well as appealing to strategy gamers looking to see a classic title pulled more in line with modern technology.
