Final Fantasy X-2 - PS2 - Preview

E3 2003 - Hands On

Final Fantasy X2 marks a debut in the series by being the first full-fledged sequel to an existing game.  The similarities between this and the first Final Fantasy X are obvious:  It’s set in the same world as FFX (Spira) and follows the exploits of Yuna, the lead heroin from the first Final Fantasy X.  Teamed up with Rikku, a playable character from Final Fantasy X, and Paine, an all new character, Yuna sets out across the continent on a quest to find Tidus, the hero from FFX, and (in typical Final Fantasy fashion) gets wrapped up in a quest to save the world.

The interesting thing about X2 is the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously.  The three playable characters (Yuna, Rikku, and Paine) dress in sexy clothing and perform Charlie’s Angels-like poses on occasion.  The game is fast and furious.  The battles often last less than twenty seconds.  The new battle system being implemented calls for timed turns, meaning if you sit there and wait too long trying to devise a strategy, the enemy will attack you.  The sphere system has been done away with, and the whole game has been simplified.  The whole game has a bit of an action feel to it (Yuna totes around two guns, for crying out loud) and moves much faster.

Expect Final Fantasy X2 sometime this fall.
