Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime - NDS - Preview

E3 2006 First Look Preview

A slime walks into a bar. The bartender turns to him and says, "Why the Jello face?"

Not unlike the statement above, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime almost sounds like a bad joke. It's an action/adventure from the people that brought us Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. That's the good news. The crazy news? It stars a slime named Rocket! And he (it?) just happens to be from the kingdom of Slimenia, a slimy land that was once a peaceful place to live in. One day it's invaded by an unknown being – the mysterious one known as The Plob. The Plob kidnaps every slime it can get its hands on. Being the only blob (er...slime) that wasn't captured, Rocket must wiggle into action and save his friends, all the while uncovering gelatinous details about The Plob and his evil mission.

This might just be the craziest premise I've heard for a DS title. After seeing it on the show floor, however, I have to say the game is charming and looks to be one of the most original DS adventure games yet.

Rocket's appeal comes from his ability to bounce and stretch, two abilities the more solid-form heroes (humans) couldn't do in Dragon Quest VIII. Rocket can carry objects on his head – another element you don't usually see in RPGs or RPG spin-offs.

The controls are promised to be as smooth and seamless as possible, opening up the game for a multitude of players with a multitude of skills. Young, old, new, or a hardcore master – Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime has your number.

As if that wasn’t slimy enough, each mission concludes with a mini-game featuring a slime-shaped tank. It's called the Schleiman Tank, and has been designed to combat the enemy's vicious Monster Tanks. In typical Dragon Quest fashion, the tank is more than just a glob of goo – it can be customized to your liking with various items, weapons, and who knows what else. Allies may jump in to save your butt during the more dangerous tank battles. You’ll be able to shoot slimes at your enemies to infiltrate and sabotage the Monster Tanks. Additionally, players will be able to battle their friends whenever they want in tank vs. tank multiplayer matches.
