Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 - WII - Preview

E3 2007 Preview

It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when publishers were afraid to bring Dragon Ball Z games to the States. There were several released for the SNES in Japan that never made it to our shores. Now developers are designing DBZ games with the North American market in mind.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai: Tenkaichi 3, the second DBZ title coming to Nintendo Wii, will be quickly known for its improvements over last year’s game. The cursor control system is gone, which means that all motion control elements will be tied to the Wii remote. It also means that the sensor bar is no longer necessary, thus eliminating any of the annoyances that occurred when the controller was pointed away from the screen.

Better still, by using the Wii’s motion capabilities over the cursor / pointer feature, the game will be more direct in its actions. Players will have a greater level of control in the moves they unleash.

Over 30 stages and more than 150 characters will be featured in the game, the most of any Wii fighter (and more than any previous DBZ title). Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will also be the first DBZ game to go online, and it’ll do it exclusively on Nintendo Wii. True online battles will commence, giving the Goku and Gohan wannabes of the world a chance to face off.

As far as the graphics are concerned, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 feels much closer to a next-gen title. Yes, Wii is a next-gen system, but most of its games are at or below GameCube’s level. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 looks more dynamic, having larger worlds and a bigger scope that is somewhat superior to the original anime. Explosions, special attacks, and world destruction elements are frequent and massive – and are designed to stun all who are watching. It worked. By the time the demonstration ended, I was left wondering how amazing each of the 30+ stages will look in the finished game.

Blasting its way into stores (with charge attacks and plenty of combos) this November, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 should be the next evolution in DBZ fighting action.
