DECA Sports 3 E3 preview

Hudson’s DECA Sports has been a long-running franchise for the Nintendo Wii, offering a new collection of mini-games each year designed to take advantage of the Wii’s control possibilities. Now, Hudson is showing off its latest planned entry to the series, DECA Sports 3.

One of the main issues that players had with last year’s DECA Sports title was the lack of Wii MotionPlus support. Gamers have found the technology to be used few and far between in Wii games, but Hudson plans to rectify the issue by including MotionPlus support for the game. Additionally, some (but not all) of the sports will be playable online.

At the event, we were able to get our hands on a couple of the new sports; Lacrosse and Air Racing. Lacrosse played out simply enough, using the Wii-remote and Nunchuck combo, you run across the field, passing the ball to your teammates and waving the Wii-remote around to take a shot at the goal. You can hold down the B button when you’re ready to shoot, and the longer you hold it, the more powerful your shot will become; nothing too complex, but it worked with the game’s light mini-game atmosphere.

The other game we played was Air Racing. This mode utilized the Wii MotionPlus add-on, requiring that the player tilted the Wii-remote in all directions in order to guide their plane through a series of rings. Some of the rings require that you simply fly through them, but others require you to hold your Wii-remote sideways in order to fly through them that way, adding some challenge.

DECA Sports 3’s new Wii Motionplus controls are solidly implemented, and fans of casual mini-games on the Wii might have another purchase on their hands.
