C.O.R.E - NDS - Preview

In many ways, Graffiti Entertainment and No Way Studio is forging into new territory on the Nintendo DS. C.O.R.E. is a first-person shooter with content that is intended for mature gamers, two elements that one does not see much of on the mobile gaming platform.

According to Phillip Waites, a producer at Graffiti, the inspiration for the game was more in the vein of Quake or DOOM and to that end, the game incorporates fast-pace action against a variety of foes, some of which are mutated monsters or humans driven insane.

The game takes place in 2028 when a massive meteor has crashed to Earth in California’s Mojave Desert. Scientists were sent to the crash site and a lab was established. Twenty years have passed and the lab has gone silent. Jason Crane, a member of an elite military unit, is assigned to head to the facility and find out what happens. What he discovers is radiation that has driven the scientific team there insane, or mutated them.

The game features 15 levels of action but those are non-linear levels that will take about 10 hours of gameplay to work though. But C.O.R.E. is about more than a single-player campaign. The game also features a robust multiplayer mode that allows for both single-cart and multi-cart gaming in three game modes – capture the flag, free play and deathmatch. There are power-ups in the multiplayer, portals and the type of level design often associated with the games that provided the inspiration for this title.

In single player, there are recharge stations for life replenishment, as well as areas where players can renew their ammunition supplies. Weapons can be upgraded with better gear as players move through the game; there are eight weapons that include alternative firing options.

Graphically the game is serviceable but the sound was somewhat obscured in the noise that flooded through South Hall at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, where the game was demonstrated.

C.O.R.E. is an intriguing concept for the DS and is expected to release in the summer.
