Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 E3 preview


Bionic Commando: Rearmed represented a remake done right. The game took the great elements of the classic on which it was based and updates it for modern gamers, complete with an awesome soundtrack and gameplay that still holds up well today. Now, Capcom is hard at work preparing the game’s sequel, which promises to be an original 2.5D affair that captures its retro predecessor’s atmosphere while being a completely all-new experience. Oh yeah, and you can jump.

Jumping is a new feature in Rearmed 2. You’ll still have access to all of your combat abilities, including the bionic arm, but now you’ll have the ability to jump a small distance as well. Spencer is not as nimble as most 2D platformer characters and can only jump a small distance, but the inclusion opens up some gameplay options and varies up the gameplay over the original.

Another key change from the original Rearmed is the weaponry. You’ll have access to new weapons, including shotguns, but their ammo is finite, adding a new challenge element by forcing players to be judicious with their ammo and the types of guns they use.

Graphically, the game looks pretty similar to the original Rearmed. The 2.5D look utilizes 3D polygonal graphics on a 2D plane, and the character models are nicely animated. The action seems to be zoomed out a little bit further away from the action than the original, and the character models seem a little bit small comparatively.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 is looking to expand on the original remake by adding in a whole new storyline and gameplay elements to further push the Rearmed name, turning it into a legitimate franchise beyond its remake origins.
