E3 2009 PreviewE3 2008 GameZone Previews

KOEI has released a lot of different games this console generation, but their focus remains on the Dynasty Warriors series and its many spin-offs. Thus, it wasn’t hard to predict that a new Warriors game (the PSP version of Warriors Orochi 2, to be exact) would drop by the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Just days before the show, however, KOEI announced that they would be showing two brand-new games at E3, marking the first time the publisher has ever unveiled a new game outside of Japan. One of those games is Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll. Shown in trailer form only, Trinity is an action/RPG spawned from an RPG series called Zill O'll. Developed for the PSone, Zill O'll was not released in North America. So for us, Trinity isn't exactly a long-awaited game. But with the game's new action-oriented direction, Trinity will definitely be coming our way.

Developed by Omega Force, Trinity tells the story of three adventurers who were brought together by fate. Each character must work together in dungeons, towns and fields. Enemies are leaning toward the mythological beast end of the spectrum, but that doesn't mean every foe will be fearsome. Concept art shows flying creatures above a rustic city skyline. In another image, water is pouring off the sides of a large structure. It could be organic, maybe a tree or something from within that family, but it's hard to say for sure. A third image shows what appears to be an angel hovering at the top of a cathedral. She(?) has a red glow that drapes down the path she appeared to fly up from. Below her, you can see the faint image of a man holding a weapon.

KOEI says that the gameplay will feature environments that are fully interactive. Some areas can be frozen or set on fire. How far the game will take this, we do not know. But as a PS3 exclusive, the developers could leverage the console's power to let us freeze or burn things anywhere we turn. That would be amazing.

The trailer was short and didn't reveal much about the story or the gameplay, but it hinted that the gameplay may not be entirely different from the Dynasty Warriors series. There were many characters fighting on screen (it appeared to be CG footage from an in-game movie, not actual gameplay content), and just one hero was available to deal with the problem.

Due for release in 2010, Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll is one to keep an eye on in the coming year.
