Is “turtle power” ready to return to its glorious form that it endured in the early ‘90’s? Well, Ubisoft is hoping that new fans and old fans alike rejoice at the upcoming fighting title that is exclusive to the Nintendo Wii in the form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up. Can the four shelled heroes show off their combative strengths or will they flounder with the opportunity?

With a current small cast of selectable fighters, TMNT: Smash Up was very limited on show floors. Only having Shredder, Donatello, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Raphael, April O’Neil and Master Splinter to select as fighters, TMNT: Smash Up could’ve had more fighters to showcase from the very deep franchise of mutated animals that rival the turtles. With a variety of fighters missing, the representative at Ubisoft let the doubts end as he confirmed that new fighters will be revealed in the future.

Selecting Donatello as my fighter, I took on Splinter – played by one of the developers – and was taken to school. With a simple control scheme of pressing the 1 or 2 button for heavy or light attacks – along with using the D-pad to move across the screen – TMNT: Smash Up is a brilliantly pick-up-and-play title without a doubt. Developed by the same team who worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, TMNT: Smash Up is 2.5D fighter that should attract the attention of starving fighting fans on the Nintendo Wii.

Other maneuvers that were available to use against my opponent included: grapple (1+2 Buttons), blocking (the trigger), and using projectiles (A Button). With simple controls, there shouldn’t be any trouble for casual players who don’t want to seriously put in hours upon hours to become good in the title.

Never wanting to end the entertainment, TMNT: Smash Up employs power-ups that can be picked up and used against your opponents. Of the power-ups that were picked up, the shuriken throwing stars were one of them as I attacked Splinter in full force. The damage wasn’t as high as I would’ve liked, and the power-ups weren’t as frequent as they could’ve been, but for all intents and purposes, the power-ups did assist in achieving kills on my enemy.

Can TMNT: Smash Up revive the legendary turtles’ franchise? That remains to be seen. But as for now, with more upcoming fighters to be revealed (c’mon Jason, Rocksteady and Bebop!), TMNT: Smash Up could turn into a shining star for the Nintendo Wii this fall 2009.
