Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - WII - Preview
E3 2007 Preview
Gamers have been looking forward to this for years. The two biggest icons in all of video games, Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, are finally in a game together for the first time, facing each other for the ultimate battle for supremacy. However, instead of an action/adventure game or even a brawler like Super Smash Bros., the two are facing off in the 2008 Olympics competition in this licensed title from SEGA, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics.
While only a brief bit of gameplay was shown, the game did showcase a lot of spirit and personality associated with each game series. You could either a player from Mario’s crew including Luigi and the Princess, or Sonic’s crew with Knuckles, Tails, Dr. Eggman, and so on. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, like Mario being an all-around player and Sonic’s strengths resting in speed, naturally.
The gameplay takes advantage of the Wii’s motion sensing controls well. For the triple jump, you have to shake the Wii-mote and the nunchuck up and down in order to make your character run, then flick it up in order to make them jump at the right times and in the right places. For the hammer throw, you have to wave the Wii-mote around and then let go at the right time. And finally, the 100 meter dash requires you to do the same up and down motion until somebody wins.
The build of Mario & Sonic at the Olympics showed off at E3 was pretty slim, but certainly showed some promise, especially for the Wii, a system known for easily accessible party games, just like this one. Look for it this holiday.
