E3 2006 First Look Preview

Hit the reset button and let’s begin all over.

That was the philosophy heading into the creation of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, a title being developed for multiple platforms to be published by Vivendi Universal Games, and shown during a pre-E3 event in San Francisco recently.

The game is a single-player experience and is more battle oriented and combat driven.

The story revealed is the coming-of-age tale of this young dragon, explaining why and who he is.

There are flying levels and some of the typical arcade elements such as collecting gems (green regenerates breath, red is for health, blue are spirit gems and can be used to upgrade skills, and yellow builds up fury that when unleashed can clear the screen of enemies).

While Cynder is the main antagonist in this title, the focus is squarely on Spyro and explains how he came to hook up with Sparx. The skill system in the game enables players to customize Spyro’s abilities, giving him access to four different elements on which to base his unique attacks. The elements are fire, earth, electricity and ice. With the variety of melee abilities, and aerial juggles, it is possible to string together combos that are somewhat unique. Each of the breath skill sets have short- and long-ranged attacks.

When it comes to the look of the game, the developers on hand at the pre-E3 event said the goal was to almost create an interactive Pixar movie. But this is also a little more imposing and a little more daunting than some previous iterations of the dragon and his world.

The game looks very nicely packaged, not too far off the base line that we’ve all come to know as a Spyro title, but with enough newer elements to make for a challenging, humorous and Spyro-iffic (Ok, not a word, but Spyro fans will likely get the drift of it) time.
