Update: No PlayStation Network Cards at GameStop Until 2009 (Now Confirmed)

Update:
We can now confirm via our own source within GameStop that stores won’t be receiving PSN Cards until Spring 2009. Originally, the GameStop POS was set to receive an update in the coming month to support PSN Cards. Unfortunately, plans have changed and GameStop won’t be seeing PSN Cards until Spring 2009, at the earliest.

How hard is it to produce cardboard cards and print codes on the back? Even Nintendo managed to pull this feat off at the Wii launch.

Original Story:
Wow, this sucks…

There’s been no fanfare or official announcement from Sony, but there are PlayStation Network pre-paid cards out there. For sale, to the public. And have been for months. So long as you’ve got a Meijer near your place, that is. If you don’t, and are waiting for something a little more widespread – like GameStop, for example – you may be waiting for a while. If this email (courtesy of a GameStop employee) is legit, it looks like the nation’s largest specialist gaming retailer isn’t yet equipped to activate the cards. They were supposed to be, but they’re not. They will be in 2009. Just in case, you know. It was keeping you up at night. — Kotaku

…that is, this sucks if you’re a) GameStop, or b) a person without a credit card to use online whose only recourse for buying games is GameStop.

But I don’t think that anyone’s phone is going to be ringing off the hook for this one. Still, thought it might be good to pass the word along that someone, somewhere, might have just had their Christmas canceled.
